About Us

Swinburne Maddison is a general law practice based in Durham City. The practice as it stands today is an amalgamation (in August 1998) of the two long-established firms of Swinburne Jackson & Moreland and Wilson Maddison. This amalgamation, combining over two centuries of client service, has produced a team of 18 lawyers and 17 support staff enabling the provision of an extended range of specialist legal expertise all within one firm.

With a history of over 200 years, Swinburne Maddison still retains its traditional values which have clearly contributed to making the practice established and well respected. However, in recent years we have realised that traditional values alone no longer meet the needs of an increasingly demanding client base.

In July 2006 we moved into a modern, purpose built office at Aykley Heads Business Centre, a move which has proved to be popular with clients and staff alike. Our offices are now easily accessible from major road links and there is ample free parking on site.

All of our professional staff  take advantage of our legal update package which monitors legislation and provides daily updates on statute and case law and topical legal issues, ensuring that they can deliver up to the minute advice. To compliment the legal update package and  training programmes that the firm offers, we have a policy of working in teams which allows all professional staff to benefit from the knowledge and experience of other members of staff.

Our vision is, through getting to know our clients’ requirements thoroughly and determining their particular needs, to produce solutions which are not simply based on law but on practical workable options which meet individual client requirements.

We want our contribution to extend beyond problem solving to provide positive and constructive legal advice in a way which will assist our clients to achieve their personal and business objectives. In order to effect this we aim to provide members of our practice with a stimulating environment to enable them to develop their skills and achieve their full potential.
