John is Swinburne Maddison LLP’s Managing Partner.  He joined the Firm in 1979, qualified in 1981 and became a Partner in 1985.

Described in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition as “a calm and incisive all-rounder”, John has broad experience in commercial, agricultural and property law and has particular expertise in wills, trusts and Inheritance Tax planning.  John lives in Durham City and has represented an extensive number of prominent institutions, companies and individuals in the North East throughout a career which has seen Swinburne Maddison LLP become the practice it is today.

John has held positions as charity trustee and carried out work on significant community projects in Durham City. He enjoys football, running and is a guitar player, performing regularly in a local band.

Adam joined the firm as a paralegal in November 2015 before being promoted to the position of trainee solicitor in the Corporate and Commercial Department in May 2016.

Previously he worked for a national FTSE 250 construction and services company where he was a paralegal specialising in construction law. 

Outside of work Adam has a keen interest in the North East and is always looking for opportunities to help the region. He sits on the Board of Governors at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust where he can witness first hand the Trust’s business development as a local and national provider of healthcare. 

In his free time Adam is a keen long-distance runner, cyclist and tennis player and enjoys cooking, especially with produce from his own garden.

Lauren joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Trainee Solicitor in October 2015.  She works primarily in the Property Department, assisting with both residential and commercial matters.

A law graduate of Northumbria University, Lauren gained valuable “on the job experience” as an Administrative Assistant at a large North East firm alongside her studies and, following completion of her law degree, Lauren went on to accept a Legal Assistant position at the same firm.  During this time, Lauren worked within the Leasehold Arrears Team, further broadening her experience of commercial property work and allowing her the opportunity to manage her own case load.

Kelly joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Secretary in 2010, when she was entering the 3rd year of a law degree.

With the support of the firm, Kelly completed her studies alongside her work commitments and, following completion of the Legal Practice Course at distinction level, her role changed to that of a Trainee Solicitor in September 2015. 

Kelly now works primarily in the Private Client Department, but has broad experience of Litigation, Property and Corporate work from her time providing administrative support to those departments.

Catherine is a Solicitor in the firm's Family department, dealing primarily with relationship breakdown, public and private law children matters.

A law graduate of Northumbria University, Catherine began her career as a family paralegal at a North East firm before completing the Legal Practice Course at distinction level, in 2013. During the course of her latter studies, Catherine gained experience in Family and Criminal Law, in both administrative and paralegal positions within the region. 

Catherine joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a trainee solicitor in June 2014 and qualified on 1st July 2016.

Outside of the practice, Catherine is a keen tennis player and enjoys spending time with her family.

Roland is a Solicitor in the firm's Dispute Resolution department, advising and representing clients in relation to a diverse range of matters including debt recovery, housing disrepair claims and neighbour disputes.  He also supports the Employment department, providing advice on a variety of matters, with particular specialism in drafting contracts of employment, director service agreements and staff handbooks, and associated documentation.

Roland joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a paralegal in October 2013, before being promoted to the position of Trainee Solicitor the following year.  During his training contract, Roland worked primarily within the Dispute Resolution department but provided support in all areas across the firm.

In his free time, Roland plays football and squash, is an avid reader and enjoys studying Spanish and English literature. His favourite authors are Dostoevsky, Edgar Allan Poe and Kazuo Ishiguro.

David qualified as a Solicitor in 2005 and joined Swinburne Maddison LLP in 2012.

He specialises in residential conveyancing and manages an extensive portfolio of cases. David deals with registered and unregistered land, leasehold properties, residential sales, purchases, remortgages, matrimonial conveyancing and transfers of equity.

He also has an interest in private client work and is a student member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practioners (STEP).

Allan is a Solicitor at Swinburne Maddison LLP having joined the Firm in 1995.

He is on both the 24 Hour Police Station and Court Duty Rotas and deals with criminal matters and representation in the Magistrates' Court through to Criminal Appeals. 

In particular, Allan represents parents in all aspects of Public Law proceedings, both before the issue of care proceedings in Child Protection and PLO Meetings and, where care proceedings have been issued by a Local Authority seeking Court decisions in relation to children, at the actual hearings before the Courts.

Significantly, he is accredited by the Law Society as a Children Law (Adult Representative). This is a quality mark for legal professionals working in child-related law and demonstrates Allan's superior experience, knowledge and provision of best practice in child-related law.

Allan is currently Law Society Council Member for Northumbria.  Council is the ruling body for the Law Society on a national level and he attends Council meetings in London and Cardiff.  In addition, in order to obtain local views on national issues, he attends local Law Society meetings in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Sunderland and Tees Valley.

At home, he enjoys spending time with his family.  He has two children - one of whom works in Oxford whilst the other works in Cambridge.  This does not affect him supporting Oxford in the Boat Race!

Jennifer is a Solicitor within the Private Client Department.  She joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Trainee Solicitor in 2007 and qualified in 2009.

Jennifer specialises in Will Drafting and Estate Planning for a wide range of clients. A Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), Jennifer counsels on complex issues such as Inheritance Tax, the administration of Business Interests and Will Trusts.

She also deals with the administration of estates following a death. This includes advice and support in relation to obtaining the Grant, drawing down estate assets, distributing the estate and attending to other formalities such as Income Tax and Inheritance Tax.

Jennifer is frequently involved in applications to the Court of Protection for Deputyship Orders and Statutory Wills when a person lacks the mental capacity to manage their own affairs. She also advises clients on lifetime planning and all aspects of Trusts and Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Mike joined Swinburne Maddison in 2013 and works in the Corporate and Commercial Department.

He qualified in 2005 having returned to the UK from  a career overseas providing legal liaison and management services to a diverse portfolio of international clients.  Mike has developed particular expertise in Company Law, Commercial Contracts, Intellectual Property and IT & e-commerce.

In the main, Mike advises limited companies; drafting bespoke articles of association, shareholder agreements and employee options. He also counsels on more technical corporate reconstructions and succession issues including demergers, reductions of capital, share exchanges and own share purchases.

Mike provides contracts advice for businesses covering terms of business with customers and suppliers and routes to market as well as more specialist areas such as software development, intellectual property assignment/licensing and all aspects of e-commerce including cloud computing.

At home, Mike is a keen chef who enjoys country walks and a historical interest in Britain's inland waterways.

Rebecca joined Swinburne Maddison LLP in 2011 where she has since qualified as a Solicitor.

She deals with cross-departmental case aspects, including commercial and residential property matters and social housing.  This adds to her previous experience as a Legal Assistant for civil and criminal litigation, property and debt matters with both a private practice in York and the Citizens Advice. 

Rebecca also recently completed a Masters in Law and away from the office she enjoys spending time with her family and is a keen gardener and cyclist.

Kath is a Chartered Legal Executive and Head of the Family Department at Swinburne Maddison LLP. 

She has over 20 years of experience in all aspects of relationship breakdown and is an accredited Mediator and Collaborative Lawyer.  Kath has been a member of the Law Society’s Family Law Panel since 2002, specialising in finance and children’s issues. 

Her focus is to always achieve a fair and reasonable resolution in relation to family breakdown from divorce, separation and dividing assets to making arrangements for children.

As an experienced family law advocate, Kath is well known on the North Eastern Court circuit and is familiar with fellow solicitors as well as barristers practising in this area.

Clients have given very positive feedback about Kath, often commenting on her supportive yet professional manner and her first class service, and she was described in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition as a lawyer "who reaches the best agreement for clients and will fight their corner if necessary."

Chris Ross qualified as a Solicitor in 2006 and joined Swinburne Maddison LLP from a large regional firm, in January 2014.

He has acted for a wide range of regional and national developers, dealing with acquisitions through to plot sales and the associated work this entails. He has also acted for both landlord and tenant matters for industrial, office premises and retail. Chris will continue to be involved in this area of work at Swinburne Maddison LLP.

Outside of work, Chris enjoys running, swimming and spending time with his family. He has taken part in a number of Great North Runs over the years.

Mark is an Associate and a Chartered Legal Executive who qualified in 1979. He is also an Associate of Swinburne Maddidon LLP which he joined in 1992.

Mark manages all aspects of the preparation of Wills, the completion of Lasting Powers of Attorney, applications to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a Deputy and the administration of estates following a death. He also acts for Builders and Developers regarding the sales of New Build properties, throughout the North East region.

Away from the office, Mark is a passionate breeder and exhibitor of Cocker Spaniels. He is also a respected dog championship International Judge.

Anna joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Solicitor in January 2014.

Originally from Durham, Anna moved to the South West and qualified in 2008 whilst working in a large legal practice where she acted on a wide range of cases including representation of high profile trust clients and agricultural clients. On returning to the North East with her family, Anna joined a local firm before joining Swinburne Maddision LLP.

At Swinburne Maddison LLP, Anna’s specialist areas are wills, trusts and probate. She advises in relation to wills and the administration of estates and also provides advice on inheritance tax planning and trusts and personal injury trusts.  

Anna is a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Helen joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Secretary to one of the Firm’s Partners, in 2007.

Following her completion of the Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, Helen’s role changed in October 2013 to that of an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives. Helen has been awarded a CILEx Level 6 Higher Diploma in Law and Practice which follow’s her achievement of a Diploma at Level 3.

Helen works in the Property department where she acts in connection with residential sales and purchases and commercial leases, as well as providing input to site acquisitions and developments.

Outside the office, Helen enjoys walking and spending time with her family.

Sarah is a Solicitor in the Corporate Department of Swinburne Maddison.

She joined the firm at the end of 2015, bringing with her a strong commercial background having previously worked for Lloyds Bank for almost ten years, including time spent working as an Assistant Relationship Manager, managing a large portfolio of businesses.

Sarah is experienced in all aspects of corporate and commercial law. Prior to joining Swinburne Maddison, she worked for a boutique corporate and commercial law firm with offices in Newcastle and London, where she provided specialist advice to, predominantly, start-up companies in the technology sector.

Away from the office, Sarah enjoys going to the gym, walking in the lake district, cooking healthy recipes and nights out with friends.

Rachel joined the firm in 2016 and is a Trainee Solicitor in the firm’s Dispute Resolution Department, where she advises and represents clients in a wide range of civil matters, including housing disrepair, personal injury and contractual disputes.

Rachel graduated from Durham University and BPP Leeds, achieving a Distinction in her Legal Practice Course following an honours degree in Biomedical Science. During her studies Rachel volunteered for BPP’s legal advice clinic as a student advisor, providing free legal advice to members of the public.

Prior to joining Swinburne Maddison LLP Rachel worked as a Healthcare Litigation Paralegal for a leading specialist law firm, representing the NHS in clinical negligence cases.

Outside the office Rachel enjoys walking and is a keen skier.

Rachel is a commercial property solicitor at Swinburne Maddison LLP and joined the firm in November 2015.

She has extensive property related experience which includes general commercial conveyancing, property development work and advising in agricultural property matters. 

Rachel qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and prior to joining Swinburne Maddison LLP, spent five years at a London law firm as well as a year in Albania working in-house for a development company drawing up contracts for intenational clients, before moving north to accept a position at another local law firm.

Gillian is a commercial property solicitor at Swinburne Maddison LLP and joined the firm in April 2014.

Gillian qualified as a solicitor in 2005 and has worked as a property solicitor at a sole practitioner's firm, a large international firm and, more recently, as part of the in-house legal team at a Government owned bank.

Described in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition as a lawyer who is “extremely thorough and has a total grasp of the details,” Gillian has extensive property related experience which includes residential conveyancing, property development work and commercial landlord and tenant matters.

Outside of the office, Gillian enjoys running and has taken part in a number of marathons and half-marathons. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Andrew joined Swinburne Maddison LLP upon qualification as a Solicitor in September 2016, after completing his training contract at a large regional law firm and having also previously worked at an international firm of solicitors specialising in insurance litigation. 

Prior to commencing his legal training, Andrew gained valuable experience in the public sector, working for the NHS. 

At Swinburne Maddison, Andrew specialises in commercial property and advises on a wide range of commercial Landlord and Tenant matters, including drafting and negotiating leases and all ancillary documentation, for both landlords and tenants.  He is also experienced in development work, including the sale and acquisition of land, option agreements, overage, and secured lending.  With a broad client base, Andrew acts on behalf of a number of public sector clients and registered providers of social housing as well as private individuals and local developers.

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys weight training at the gym and is a keen football fan.

Nadine is Solicitor within the Private Client department. She joined Swinburne Maddison LLP from another large regional firm in August 2016.

Nadine specialises in Will Drafting, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and overseeing the creation and administration of Trusts.  She also deals with the administration of estates following a death, provides advice on Inheritance Tax planning methods, and has successfully made applications to the Court of Protection for Deputyship Orders which are required when a person lacks the mental capacity to manage their own affairs.  Nadine prides herself on working hard to offer high quality, tailored legal advice which is free from jargon and delivered in a sensitive manner.

In early 2016, Nadine completed the Older Client Care in Practice award to become an Associate Member of “Solicitors for the Elderly”, an independent national organisation of over 1500 lawyers which aims to support older people.

Outside of work, Nadine is an outdoor enthusiast and can often be found cycling, running or walking in the hills of County Durham or further afield.  In summer 2016, she completed the Tour du Mont Blanc and has also walked many of the UK’s long-distance trails, including the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way.

Caroline is a temporary solicitor in the commercial property team of Swinburne Maddison.  She joined the firm in September 2017 to provide maternity cover and has proven a great asset to the team since her arrival.

Caroline has over 25 years of property experience which includes general commercial conveyancing (both freehold and leasehold), agricultural property matters (including drafting and negotiating farm business tenancies, overage agreements and first registration of sporting and fishing rights) and complex development work.

Scott is a Property Litigation Solicitor who joined Swinburne Maddison in May 2017, having previously worked within a large regional law firm for over 8 years.

Scott has extensive experience of broad commercial litigation work but his particular specialism is in property litigation, acting on a wide range of commercial and residential cases. 

A member of the Property Litigation Association, Scott has expertise in all manner of real property, landlord & tenant and housing disputes.  He can advise on termination and renewal of tenancies, dilapidations, rent reviews, unlawful eviction, residential tenancies, long leaseholds and commercial property management issues.  The latter includes tenant default, restrictive covenants, easement disputes, prescriptive rights, trespass, nuisance, exercise of options, enforcement of contracts for sale and other related matters.

David joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Trainee in 2007. He qualified in 2009 and became a Partner at the firm in May 2014.

With particular expertise in property litigation, David works closely with a number of the Firm's largest clients in the management of their housing stock and his team was recently described in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition as “one of the most progressive and efficient in the market”.  He advises and represents clients in relation to all manner of commercial and residential property related issues including rent arrears and anti-social behaviour matters as well as succession claims and evictions. David's caseload includes a significant amount of commercial litigation including debt recovery work for both individuals and companies, along with wider civil litigation claims including those arising from commercial leases and disputed probates.

David assists on employment matters, including representation for both Claimants and Respondents dealing with contentious and non-contentious instructions. A career highlight was where he led on a high profile complex disability discrimination case which was resolved in our client's favour following a 10 day final hearing.

David was awarded the title of Rising Star – Young Lawyer of the Year at the Northern Law Awards 2016.

Away from the office, David enjoys spending time with his young family, devotes a great deal of his free time as Chairman of the Durham City Amateur Swimming & Water Polo Club and is also an avid follower of football.

Alex joined Swinburne Maddison LLP in 2010 with a strong commercial background and the accolade of an MBA. He became a Partner at the firm in May 2014.

Alex specialises in corporate and commercial matters and has particular expertise in business acquisitions, disposals and corporate restructuring. In recognition of his experience leading on transactional matters, Alex was shortlisted for Young Dealmaker of the Year at the Insider North East Dealmakers Awards 2016.  Alex frequently works in-house at one of the North East's largest construction companies. 

Described as a “very experienced, capable corporate partner” in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition, Alex takes pride in his ability to provide high quality, commercially driven advice in relation to complex legal issues and leads teams of lawyers to deliver positive solutions to clients.

Martyn is a Partner and head of the Corporate and Commercial team within the firm. Having trained and qualified with the firm, Martyn was appointed as a Partner in 2010.

Martyn has been instrumental in developing the corporate and commercial services that the firm offers and regularly advises on a range of issues.

Described as a “very experienced, capable corporate partner” in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition, Martyn’s expertise includes advising on general financial matters, business acquisitions and disposals, corporate restructuring, corporate governance issues and general company law.  Within the commercial sphere, he has advised in relation to numerous service level agreements and general terms and conditions of business within various sectors, including IT and e-commerce.

Martyn has also been lead advisor on complex outsourcing arrangements for clients within both the public and private sector.

Swinburne Maddison’s Corporate and Commercial team regularly support clients on banking matters, including general borrowings, working capital arrangements and term loan facilities to more complex syndicated borrowing.

Martyn has been recognised for his services and advice within the sphere of mergers and acquisitions and was named Corporate Lawyer of the Year 2015 at the Insider North East Dealmakers Awards. In the very same year Martyn was also awarded the title of Young Lawyer of the Year at the Northern Law Awards 2015. In 2016 Martyn and the team were also shortlisted for Corporate Lawyer of the Year and Corporate Law Firm of the Year at the Insider North East Dealmaker Awards.

Kate is a Partner in the Commercial Property Department and Head of Residential Conveyancing at Swinburne Maddison LLP.

She has been instrumental in the Firm's achievement of the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality Scheme accreditation.  Kate has also played a key role in expanding the work of the Conveyancing Department, despite challenging economic conditions.

On a day to day basis Kate deals with commercial Landlord and Tenant transactions, including drafting and negotiating leases, licences for alterations, licences to occupy, underlettings and deeds of variation. Recommended in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition as a lawyer with a “wealth of knowledge", Kate is also experienced in dealing with other aspects of real estate work including property acquisitions and sales including development sites, conditional contracts and options. Kate also acts for private sector clients including developers and investors and spanning various sectors including retail, health and hospitality.

Simon joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Partner in 2014 from his previous position as Partner and Head of the Commercial and Agricultural Property team at BHP Law.

Simon has specialised in Commercial Property for over 25 years and so has extensive experience in a wide range of commercial, agricultural and property matters.  Most recently Simon’s work has concentrated on high value sales and purchases of land for development and investment, commercial leases and substantial residential and commercial development, both in the region and beyond.

Simon is also a Notary Public and can provide a range of notarial services including witnessing and authenticating the execution of documents for use abroad.

Away from the office, Simon enjoys cycling, visiting the theatre, playing guitar and following a range of sports, particularly rugby and football.

Victoria is a Partner at Swinburne Maddison LLP. She is responsible for the Firm's commercial property services and management of commercial property portfolios.

Victoria is a lead advisor for complex commercial deals and has managed large scale developments both within and beyond County Durham, including site acquisition, site set-up and inter-developer agreements. She also acts for property developers, landlords and registered providers of social housing. 

Recommended in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition as a lawyer whose “advice is always reliable”, Victoria’s wide commercial property expertise covers conditional contracts, rights of pre-emption and landlord and tenant matters, from corner shop leases to leases for business properties where rents exceed £500,000 p.a.

Away from the office, Victoria is an advanced open-water scuba diver. She is also a keen runner and has taken part in the Great North Run.

Jonathan is a Partner and the Head of the Employment and Dispute Resolution Departments at Swinburne Maddison LLP. He trained with the Firm and was later promoted to Partner in 1995. As well as practising in his specialist areas of employment law and dispute resolution, Jonathan has a strategic role in the management and development of the practice.

The source of Jonathan’s employment case work includes national PLCs, limited companies, LLPs, partnerships and charities. This also extends to registered social landlords and academic institutions such as universities and schools.

Working closely with clients’ senior and human resources personnel, Jonathan provides comprehensive employment related services including preparing and reviewing contracts of employment, policies, procedures and staff handbooks, advising in relation to Executive terminations, redundancy programmes, business reorganisations and transfers (TUPE), drafting Settlement Agreements, representing clients at Employment Tribunals and defending claims for unfair dismissal, discrimination, etc.

Jonathan also acts for individual employees, such as Senior Executives, when they are negotiating their departure from a role, and was recommended in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition for his ability to “convey complicated aspects of employment law to laypeople”.  He was also praised for providing “a high quality of advice at a competitive rate”.

Regarding dispute resolution, Jonathan represents clients in a broad range of civil disputes including contractual and commercial disputes and allegations of professional negligence and was recommended in The Legal 500 United Kingdom 2016 edition for his “wealth of knowledge” in litigation matters.  Jonathan assists and guides clients from the early stages of a dispute to a satisfactory resolution either through Court proceedings or, most commonly, via mediation.

Carolyn joined Swinburne Maddison LLP in 2001. She initially worked as a family solicitor and is now Practice Manager at the firm. Carolyn became a Partner in May 2014.
