Head of the Family Department, Kath Hill, and fellow members of a north east Barnardo’s committee were thrilled to attend Buckingham Palace on Thursday 12th May for a Garden Party to celebrate 150 years of the great children’s charity.
The party was hosted by the charity’s current President, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, who succeeded Cherie Blair in 2007.
Swinburne Maddison’s association with Barnardo’s first began in 1993 when former Partner, Phil Jones, formed the committee alongside current Chair, Keith Johnson, and Treasurer, David Roberts. After Phil’s tragic death in a road accident in 1997, Kath was invited to take her friend and colleague’s place on the committee and continue the good work which he started 4 years before. Kath has remained an active and committed member of the committee ever since and has played a key role in the organisation and running of the annual Sportsperson’s dinner. To date, this annual event has raised over £300,000.00 for Barnardo’s.
As an ongoing tribute to founding member and keen cricketer, Phil Jones, the committee also continues to make annual contributions to the Phil Jones Memorial Trust Fund, which aims to support young cricketers who may need financial help towards training or provision of equipment.
Thanks to the hard work and commitment of dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters such as Kath and her fellow committee members, Barnardo’s has been able to help and care for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children and young people since the charity was founded by Thomas Barnardo in 1866.
