Today marks the start of Family Mediation Week, which runs from 22nd to 26th January 2024. The purpose of Family Mediation Week is to raise awareness of mediation as a means of resolving disputes arising out of the breakdown of a relationship.
Mediation is a brilliant tool for partners/spouses whose relationships have sadly broken down and whom aren’t in agreement about issues such as the family finances or spending time with the children of the family. The benefits of mediation for clients are that it puts them at the heart of the matter, taking control of the discussions and allowing separated parties to make decisions together, building a better future for the family as a whole.
Within mediation, the focus of discussions will be on achieving an outcome that is fair and meets the needs of the whole family, parents as well as children. Mediators will meet with both parties in advance of commencing working with the family and will progress matters in an impartial and non-judgmental way.
Whilst mediation is not suitable in each and every case, where it is appropriate it is a very effective means of resolving matters in a more bespoke manner which is often not achieved with the rigid court process. It allows for issues to be aired more quickly and more cost-effectively.
If you are interested in mediation or alternative dispute resolution when dealing with a separation, breakdown of a relationship or children’s dispute, please do not hesitate to contact Catherine Lowther on (0191) 384 2441 or cel@swinburnemaddison.co.uk to discuss how mediation may benefit you and your family.
