We embrace the future while learning from the past, creating a space where everyone can thrive. It’s this balance that helps us build strong connections and a true sense of community.

“Let’s build a whole community. Where everyone feels a personal connection and a sense of belonging.” – Jonathan Moreland, Managing Partner.

We’re proud to be modern in our methods, but we never forget our roots. And no, it’s not about being stuck in the past—it’s about learning from it.

That’s what makes us who we are today: contemporary, yet traditional at heart.

1998 – 2005

While our roots stretch back well before 1998, this era marks a defining moment. It’s when two neighbouring firms, Swinburne Jackson & Moreland and Wilson Maddison, merged to form what would become one of Durham City’s largest law firms. By August 1998, Swinburne Maddison was officially in business with 15 solicitors and 20 support staff.

Back then, things were a little different—no mobile phones, no internet, and deals were often sealed over a pint. The merger, initiated by former managing partner John Davison and the late Bob Furness, was a testament to the friendly rivalry and shared values of the two firms. Our offices were nestled near Durham Cathedral, along North Bailey, full of character, reflecting our rich heritage.

2006 – 2010

As much as we loved our city-centre roots, it was time for something new.

In 2006, we packed up and moved to Aykley Heads, where we still are today. This purpose-built office provided the modern facilities we needed, including better transport links and on-site parking for staff and clients alike.

Our relocation marked a pivotal moment—the team was growing fast, and so were our services. The four senior partners at the time recognised the need for change, and our new office became the perfect space to carve out our specialisms and prepare for future growth.

2011 – 2016

Once we were settled, it was time to stand out. In 2011, we underwent a full rebrand, bidding farewell to our traditional blue and gold branding and embracing a vibrant green identity.

In 2014, we further committed to nurturing talent by appointing three new Partners, including our first non-fee-earning partner in a Practice Manager role. This era symbolised our focus on building a strong leadership team and creating opportunities for internal growth.

2017 – 2019

February 2017 brought an exciting opportunity—we took sole occupation of Venture House. This expansion allowed us to recruit more talent and accommodate a growing team.

June 2017 was a proud moment, as we were named Law Firm of the Year at the Northern Law Awards. In early 2018, we completed a major £500k refurbishment of our offices, transforming them into a modern, bespoke workspace with upgraded IT infrastructure and fresh new furniture.

We continued to invest in our people, introducing the role of Managing Associates in May 2018, promoting three rising stars. That same year, we launched a redesigned, mobile-optimised website and a new marketing campaign, ensuring a stronger digital presence.

2020 – 2023

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, we faced unprecedented challenges. But thanks to our dedicated team, we adapted quickly—supporting clients through the property boom, CBILS loans and other urgent matters. Our property teams shone, providing crucial support during uncertain times.

In 2021, Jonathan Moreland became our Managing Partner, leading a newly formed management team focused on growth and innovation. By 2022, we were proud recipients of the Investors in People award, recognising our commitment to developing talent.

2023 was a milestone year. We reclaimed our title as Law Firm of the Year at the Northern Law Awards and were shortlisted for Commercial Property Law Firm of the Year at the Legal 500 Northern Powerhouse Awards. To celebrate 25 years since the merger, we reaffirmed our core values—trust, care, collaboration, and agility—ensuring they remain central to everything we do.
