Question 1: Where did you study law and why did you want to become a lawyer?

I joined Swinburne Maddison 2007, as secretary to one of the partners, with limited experience of law. Shortly after joining, I found that I really enjoyed it, particularly dealing with residential property transactions.

In 2008 a colleague recommended that I look into qualifying as a lawyer following the CILEx route. I studied for my Level 3 Diploma at Newcastle College, and then went on to study for the Level 6 Diploma with CILEx Law School, which is a distance learning course. This route gave me the opportunity to earn, learn and qualify at my own pace.

Question 2: Why did you want to specialise in Property work?

My role as a secretary in property team gave me the taste of the type of law wished to qualify into.

I find laws and regulations in property particularly interesting when it comes to acting for clients when they are purchasing a property, whether that is their first home, family home, downsizing when children have flown the nest or simply an investment property. Each case is individual; every client has their own set of unique requirements for their property and it truly brings a great deal of diversity to the role.

I enjoy working with people on a personal level and sharing in the experience with my clients when helping them to achieve their property goals of purchasing their dream home or investing in their future.

Question 3: What has been your greatest achievement at Swinburne Maddison?

It’s hard to think of just one achievement to rank above others. What really motivates and provides me with great satisfaction is knowing that my role as a lawyer is extremely important to my clients. Completion/moving day is always a stressful time, typically a Friday, but the sheer happiness and the thank you received at the end of each matter makes it all worthwhile.
