Last week we celebrated the achievements of our former Managing Partner, John Davison, who officially retired from the partnership at the end of April.
A few tears were shed at our annual team presentation where we all reflected on his outstanding career and the qualities which made him such a valued Lawyer, Partner and friend.
John played an instrumental role in growing Swinburne Maddison into the firm it is today. From initiating the merger of Swinburne, Jackson & Moreland and Wilson Maddison in 1998 (following a very productive pint in the pub with the late Robert Furness!), to our move from North Bailey in Durham City Centre to our headquarters at Aykley Heads – John was always eager to drive the business forward and help us to achieve great things.
He was a much-loved mentor who took great pride in the talented team of lawyers that he helped to build, with four of our current Partners completing their training contracts under his wing and he was more than happy to get stuck in with various challenges and activities at the firm – triathlons and all…
I’m sure you will all join us in wishing John a very long, happy and healthy retirement!
Below you will find a few photos from his time with us at SM and a snap from our send-off at The Garden House on Friday!

Thank you to our friends at Wisemove for the lovely photograph of John and our Partners enjoying a Minchella’s ice cream at our summer garden party in 2018.
