Managing Partner, Dispute Resolution and Employment Law

As Managing Partner of Swinburne Maddison, Jonathan is responsible for spearheading the management and strategic development of the firm and leading the management team as well as continuing to practise in his specialist areas of employment law and dispute resolution and heading up these teams.

With more than 30 years at Swinburne Maddison, Jonathan is passionate about building on the past success of the firm and driving forward the ambitious growth plans which will take it to the next level whilst never losing sight of the core values of integrity, client service and legal excellence that make Swinburne Maddison the firm it is today.

Experience

For over thirty years, Jonathan has been advising businesses and individuals in relation to employment law and assisting them in resolving disputes.  He acts for national PLCs, limited companies, LLPs, partnerships, charities and academic institutions, such as universities and schools.

In terms of employment law, Jonathan offers the following services:

  • Representation at Employment Tribunals (including Unfair Dismissal, Discrimination and Whistleblowing)
  • Redundancy, restructuring and TUPE advice
  • Drafting and negotiating Settlement Agreements for both employers and employees
  • Drafting Contracts of Employment, policies, procedures and Staff Handbooks
  • HR advice

Jonathan also represents clients in a broad range of civil disputes which include:

  • Commercial Litigation
  • Contractual disputes
  • Probate litigation
  • Allegations of professional negligence
  • Shareholder disputes

He assists and guides clients in the early stages of a dispute to a satisfactory resolution, either through Court proceedings or, more commonly, via mediation.

Appointments

Jonathan enjoys links with the University of Durham and is the Chair of the Trustees of the Union Society as well as legal advisor to the Governing Body of St. Chad’s College.

He is also on the panel of the County Durham Growth Fund, a £4.9 million grant scheme funded by the European Regional Development Fund, designed to provide grant support to SME’s in County Durham for capital investment projects with the aim of creating quality jobs in the private sector.

In August 2020 Jonathan was appointed as an Ambassador to the Open North Foundation, a not-for-profit company dedicated to raising funds to support businesses recovering from the impact of Covid-19, and in December 2021 was appointed as a member of the Business Durham Advisory Board.
