Associate Solicitor, Dispute Resolution

Lewis is a Solicitor within the firm’s Dispute Resolution team.  He completed his Law degree and Legal Practice Course at the University of Sheffield and stayed in the area to complete his training contract at a practice in South Yorkshire. Lewis qualified as a Solicitor in October 2018 before returning to his roots in the North East.

Lewis joined Swinburne Maddison LLP as a Solicitor in March 2020 and was promoted to the position of Associate Solicitor in May 2022.

In October 2023, Lewis was shortlisted as a Young Lawyer of the Year in the Insider Media North East Young Professional Awards 2023.

Away from work, Lewis enjoys fitness and travelling to see new places, and can be often found out and about across County Durham walking his German Shepherd.

Experience

Lewis has acted for both Claimants and Defendants throughout a wide variety of dispute resolution matters. He is regularly instructed by both individuals and businesses concerning the following types of dispute:-

  • Landlord and tenant matters
  • Possession proceedings
  • Gas and electric servicing injunctions
  • Boundaries and access
  • Mines and minerals
  • Leasehold matters
  • Commercial contracts

Lewis’ caseload includes a significant amount of property-related litigation, whereby he routinely acts for both businesses and individuals with such disputes all across the North-East.

Notable cases

Lewis has acted for several high-profile local authority and charity clients in defending housing disrepair claims and succeeded in defending those claims at County Court trials. He defends such claims in bulk and is routinely working alongside those clients’ in-house legal teams to develop strategies and internal procedures.

Lewis has also been involved with misrepresentation disputes in the High Court, high-value mines and minerals litigation, and complex disputes in the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber). One particular property-related dispute highlight involved Lewis successfully representing multiple Defendants regarding alleged water and noise nuisance from a car wash business.
