Question 1: Where did you study law and why did you want to become a lawyer?
At home! I came to the law later in life and instead of doing a conversion course, I chose to obtain an LLB from the University of London whilst continuing to work in the Caribbean. I then came home to do my LPC in York. I enrolled with one of the first Internet based distance learning support providers and the whole thing was done and dusted in three years. I even won a prize along the way.
As for motivation, in every job I had done up to then I had, perhaps due to my sense of order and love of language, gravitated towards the legal side of things and by then it was the logical next step.
Question 2: Why did you want to specialise in Corporate and Commercial law?
I had been working overseas for a number of years and much of my work had been in similar fields. For example, I had worked closely with the local authorities on the world’s first Internet-based companies registry and the new companies legislation needed to implement it.
When I returned to the UK it seemed sensible to qualify in order to continue with similar work and I still have a special interest in company law as well as undertaking contracts work for software and cloud-computing businesses.
Question 3: What has been your greatest achievement at Swinburne Maddison?
I am not one for great achievements but I am pleased that I am still acting for several clients who first engaged me over 10 years ago when I worked at another firm. I must be doing something right!
