Swinburne Maddison has reinforced its position as one of the North East’s leading law firms after achieving another strong performance in the Legal 500 2027 rankings.

The Durham-headquartered firm retained its four Tier 1 rankings across Corporate & Commercial, Commercial Property, Commercial Litigation and Social Housing, while securing 25 individual recognitions and achieving a new Firm to Watch ranking for its Contentious Trusts & Probate practice. The results reinforce Swinburne Maddison’s position as one of the North East’s leading law firms and reflect its continued focus on delivering exceptional outcomes for clients.

Widely regarded as one of the most respected legal directories in the UK and internationally, Legal 500 rankings are based on an extensive assessment process involving detailed submissions, independent market research and confidential feedback from clients and professional contacts.

The latest results build on Swinburne Maddison’s reputation for delivering high-quality legal advice across a broad range of sectors and practice areas and reflect the strength and depth of expertise found throughout the firm.

Among the key highlights were new individual rankings for James Curran, Charlotte Excell, Lewis Brown and Amy Pyman, together with the promotion of Craig Malarkey from Next Generation Partner to Leading Partner in the Corporate & Commercial rankings.

The firm also achieved recognition across ten practice areas, with Contentious Trusts & Probate being named a Firm to Watch, a category reserved for teams identified by Legal 500 researchers as having a strong and significant future in the region.

The results further reinforce the firm’s commitment to client service, with Swinburne Maddison continuing to achieve exceptional client satisfaction scores. The firm recently secured a top 10 Net Promoter Score (NPS) ranking nationally, placing it among the highest-performing law firms in the UK for client experience and recommendation. This independent measure of client loyalty and satisfaction reflects the trust clients place in the firm and complements the external recognition achieved through the Legal 500 research process.

Managing Partner, Jonathan Moreland, celebrated the announcement:

“These results are a reflection of the commitment, expertise and collaboration shown across every department in the firm. What makes Legal 500 recognition particularly meaningful is that it is based not only on the work we submit, but also on the independent feedback provided by clients and professional contacts. To see so many of our people recognised is incredibly rewarding and a testament to the quality of service delivered across the business.”

Victoria Walton, Head of Commercial Property and Incoming Managing Partner, continued:

“Retaining four Tier 1 rankings, increasing our individual recognitions and securing a new Firm to Watch recognition demonstrates the strength and depth of talent across the firm. These results reflect the confidence our clients place in us and provide a strong platform as we continue to invest in our people, grow our services and strengthen our position as one of the North East’s leading law firms.”

The results saw recognition across every ranked department. Among those recognised were Martyn Tennant, Alex Wilby, Craig Malarkey, Victoria Walton, Kate Stephenson, David Low, Jonathan Moreland, Gillian Moir, Abigail Zuk, James Curran, Charlotte Excell, Sharney Randhawa, Catherine Lowther and Amy Pyman, all of whom received individual Legal 500 rankings.

The Legal 500 editorial commentary also highlighted the expertise of lawyers across the firm, including Matthew Ray, Rebecca Logue, Jennifer Wade, Lewis Brown, Jenna Keir-Kendrew, Ellie Straughan, Niamh Wilson, Olivia Fisher, Akkelin Harris, Laura Murphy and Hope Gallant, reflecting the growing strength and depth of talent across Swinburne Maddison’s teams.

What The Research Said About Swinburne Maddison

The Legal 500 research process incorporates extensive client and market feedback, with this year’s results featuring praise for teams across the firm.

  • “Swinburne Maddison is a modern, full-service regional firm combining strong technical capability with a genuinely people-led, straight-talking approach. They position themselves as an extension of their clients’ teams, focusing on pragmatic, outcome-driven advice rather than legal jargon. Clients value their breadth across both commercial and private work, specialist strength in areas like corporate, property, and disputes, and their ability to support businesses through the full lifecycle with clear, commercially focused guidance. Compared to other firms, they feel more agile and collaborative, with a strong regional presence and a willingness to embrace innovation—particularly in tech and emerging areas—while retaining a close-knit, accessible culture that larger firms often lack.”
  • “We have been working with the SM team now for a couple of years, and they are all extremely professional in how they approach all situations. They listen intently to what we, as a business, need and go out of their way to help us make informed and rational decisions when it comes to all legal matters.”
  • “The experience we had with Swinburn Maddison LLP was completely positive and left us reassured in the litigation process. We were a small fish up against a large national outfit, and the outcome achieved gave us the belief that sometimes the little guy succeeds. This was down in no small part to the team at Swinburne Maddison and the expertise of their staff. From beginning to end, the team led us through the litigation process and at critical stages identified and explained the risks, which enabled us to make well-informed decisions knowing we had the support of the team behind us. What was abundantly clear was their expertise in matters of law and their ability to grasp an understanding of our business and the dispute in a relatively short space of time. Preparation and research were thorough, and when relayed to us, it was explained in a clear and concise manner without undue legal terminology.”

The 2027 rankings reinforce Swinburne Maddison’s position as one of the North East’s leading law firms and reflect the firm’s continued investment in its people, client relationships and service delivery.  For more information on we offer, please contact hello@swinburnemaddison.co.uk or alternatively call our team on 0191 384 2441.
